Yarning Circle

Feb 17, 2023

We have opened a new place space with a Yarning Circle which simply means a place to dialogue, or 'yarn', where all voices are included. The use of a yarning circle is an important process within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to learn from a collective group, build respectful relationships, and to preserve and pass on cultural knowledge. The concept of a yarning circle has been used by people from around the world for centuries and in our school is a space to encourage wellbeing and social emotional learning. Our new Yarning Circle is intended to be used by all in our community members whether for class, bible study, group sessions, or meeting with community members. It is also a contemplative 'play' space for children at lunchtime.

Our new basketball co-ordinator, Jeremiah, comes to our school with a wealth of experience as a professional coach and semi-professional player. Our first WAS Basketball teams joined a competition last week with the Year 2 boys playing a great game assisted by our awesome assistant high school student coaches! Well done Jeremiah for all your hard work getting this program set up!

Over the Christmas holidays, with the support of Mrs Jasmine Delacruz, one of our students entered an essay writing competition. From a range of different categories, our student chose to write an essay on Irony in the topic of English Literature. The competition included more than 10,000 entrants from around the world. Last week she was thrilled to be informed that she had been awarded a scholarship to assist her in attending a residential summer school at Cambridge University to study Advanced English Literature. We are so excited for this talented student and can’t wait to hear about her experience later this year.

Some of our students were able to participate in the Woolworths Junior Landcare photography session this morning. Our school was able to showcase all the wonderful veggie gardens we have established as well as our brand new yarning circle, composting system and weaving wall. It makes us all very proud to be a part of the Home & School Gardening Committee which is connecting our community. Thank you to all the Environmental Ambassadors that are actively greening our school, looking after the chickens, watering the gardens and recycling around our school. Thank you for leading out in sustainability and greening our school!
